Waterfalls The Chinese word for landscape is Shan-Shui meaning mountain and water so that water is an especially important element in an Chinese landscape painting. Waterfalls are an enhancement. Examples are included of reeds and grasses. ‘Water-gate’ is the Chinese term for a waterfall leaping down to a creek between the deep gorge that is formed. Waterfalls bring a feeling of motion to a painting. A huge water source flowing down a steep crag forms a waterfall. It is not always necessary to show the water’s source. The steeper the incline, the faster the water flows. There are three basic methods for painting water/waterfalls: Contouring, using color and implying water with a void. |
